A Tribute to William Q. Judge

No one ever tried less than he to gain from men that adherence which comes from impressive manner. I hardly thought what he was while he spoke; but on departing I found my heart, wiser than my brain, had given itself away to him, an inner exaltation lasting for months witnessed his power. It was in that memorable convention in London two years ago that I first glimpsed his real greatness. As he sat there quietly, one among many, not speaking a word, I was overcome by a sense of spiritual dilation, of unconquerable will about him, and that one figure with the grey head became all the room to me. Shall I not say the truth I think? Here was a hero out of the remote, antique, giant ages come among us, wearing but on the surface the vesture of our little day.

The claim of William Q. Judge upon us is impersonal and universal. If there be little said about him as an occultist, it is because such men, in such relations, leave no vissible, material traces. Of them it may be said, in the language of paradox: They are known to be what they are because they are unknown; they have suffered that other men may rejoice; hatred is their portion because they have loved much; sorrow is their lot until that day when the whole world shall rejoice. Such men, in their unrecorded deeds, wear the likeness of the rootless Root, the unevolved Evolver, in the sense that, being themselves obscure, they are the source of greatness in others. Themselves silent, they are the cause of eloquence in others. Theirs are the thoughts which spur others to great deeds. Theirs is the quietness which overcomes everything, just as water, the softest thing, overcomes all hardness. They, and they alone, come into this world of ours with one idea, one ideal, which they carry out along a hundred lines with unwavering purpose, never pausing, never resting, never changing, knowing no alteration of mind, no lesser deity than the One Self, no other service than the service of that Self hidden in humanity.

He told me he had read of my work among the poor and had gone down there to see it for himself. He had found it, so far, practical and valuable, he said; but also had divined my discontent with it and my hunger for something that would go much deeper, removing the causes of misery and not merely relieving the effect….Fully and accurately to describe him would be beyond my power, he so stood out above the run of men in deep wisdom and lofty nobility of character. He had made theosophy the living power in his life, and none could be so bitter against him as to exhaust his tolerance or his compassion.
It was he who first gave me glimpses of the power of thought and made me realize what it will do to build or ruin the destiny of a human being. And in doing so, he showed me how to find in theosophy solution of all the problems that had vexed me: how it points the way to the right treatment of the downtrodden and outcast of humanity, and to the real remedies for poverty, vice, and crime. On all these subjects the first word of theosophy is this: he who would enter upon the path that leads to truth must put new interpretations on the failings and mistakes of his fellowmen. He must come to understand the law of eternal justice – karma, that “whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” – and to know the necessity it implies for an unconquerable compassion.

Gottfried de Purucker comes from the same mystical background as Helena P. Blavatsky. He distinguises himself by the clarity with which he explains the theosophical ideas and the accuracy with which he preserves their purity. He was head of the Theosophical Society from 1929 until his passing in 1942

This work is one of his many books. It is in many respects an opening of new and inner doors to hitherto carefully guarded esoteric knowledge, and was considered by De Purucker as his most important contribution to Theosophical literature. It supplements with important detail and keen philosophical analysis the Theosophical teachings given by H.P. Blavatsky in her masterpiece The Secret Doctrine

What is this tradition, knowledge of which remains almost totally unknown? It is the esoteric tradition stretching back to the beginnings of time — that line of teaching and teachers, that golden thread of Truth, which has never been broken, which is the essence of the secret wisdom of Nature. It is that Wisdom preserved for mankind through the agency of the Mystery-Schools of the past, and again presented to the world through the medium of a reawakened Theosophical Movement. Dit boek geeft een beeld van de bijzondere taak die Gottfried de Purucker had te vervullen in opdracht van de Meesters van Wijsheid, Mededogen en Vrede. Als Leider van The Theosophical Society en Leraar van de Oosterse School verduidelijkte hij niet alleen de grondbeginselen van de Theosofie, maar corrigeerde hij tevens vele in de loop der jaren gegroeide misvattingen en onjuiste denkbeelden.
Deze uitgave is uniek vanwege de vertaling van de oorspronkelijke – door Gottfried de Purucker zelf geautoriseerde – verslagen van enkele jaren studie van de Katherine Tingley Memorial Group, een afdeling van de Oosterse School. Kennis nemen van deze diepgaande, universele leringen van de Theosofie legt een grote verantwoordelijkheid op de schouders van zowel de Leraar, als van de vertaler, uitgever en vooral ook: de lezer. Want het Esoterische Onderricht in de Oosterse School is in principe gebonden aan zware discipline en training. Zich op de hoogte stellen van de inhoud betekent in dit licht: de verplichting op zich nemen om er ten bate van de gehele mensheid gebruik te maken, met voorbijzien aan eventuele persoonlijke voor- of nadelen. Voor allen die deze consequentie durven te aanvaarden, zal de inhoud een ware schatkamer blijken te zijn. Deze uitgave ziet juist nu het licht, omdat slechts de kennis van de Theosofie een dam kan opwerpen tegen het voortschrijdende materialisme met al zijn uitwassen.
In ruim 1400 pagina’s wordt op onmiskenbare wijze uitleg gegeven over de geestelijke grondslag van het leven. De vaak ingewikkelde technische leringen over de mens en zijn woonplaats, het universum, verklaart Gottfried de Purucker op de van hem bekende heldere en begrijpelijke manier. Daarbij is gekozen voor de aloude en beproefde vorm van vraag en antwoord. Niet alleen is het boek daardoor zeer leesbaar geworden, door de uitgebreide inhoudsopgave en index is het tevens als studieboek / naslagwerk te gebruiken.
Vele door de studenten van de Oosterse School als moeilijk ervaren onderwerpen zijn door G. de Purucker in een later stadium nader toegelicht, in de vorm van aanvullende instructies. Ook deze uiteenzettingen zijn integraal opgenomen in deze door Stichting I.S.I.S. gerealiseerde uitgave.

Gottfried de Purucker was tot zijn overlijden in 1942 Leider van The Theosophical Society. In 1929 volgde hij als zodanig Katherine Tingley op, daarmee de spirituele lijn van Leiderschap volgend die bij Helena Petrovna Blavatsky was begonnen en die door William Quan Judge en Katherine Tingley werd voortgezet.
Als zoon van Zwitserse ouders werd G. de Purucker in 1874 geboren in de Verenigde Staten, waarna hij in Genève zijn opvoeding genoot. Tijdens zijn opleiding specialiseerde hij zich in klassieke en moderne talen: Latijn, Grieks, Hebreeuws, Angelsaksisch, Sanskrit, Italiaans, Spaans, Portugees en Engels, Frans, alsmede Duits. Vooral zijn grote kennis van het Sanskrit - de ‘Taal der Goden’ – en het Hebreeuws is in zijn theosofisch werk van onschatbare waarde gebleken. In 1896 ontmoette hij Katherine Tingley, in die tijd Leidsvrouwe van The Theosophical Society, die tijdens haar eerste wereldreis Genève bezocht. Na enkele grote reizen in Zuid-Amerika verbleef hij enige jaren in Parijs. Daar werkte hij onder andere op de redactie van de Daily Messenger. In 1903 vestigde hij zich voorgoed in het Internationaal Theosofisch Hoofdkwartier te Point Loma, Californië.
Als Leider begon G. de Purucker direct te werken aan een vergroting van The Theosophical Society, langs lijnen die tevoren door hem en Katherine Tingley waren overeengekomen. In 1931 kwam G. de Purucker naar Europa en bezocht daar naast landen als Engeland, Duitsland, Zweden, Finland en Zwitzerland, ook Nederland.Onder zijn inspirerende leiding maakte The Theosophical Society een ongekende bloei door.

G. de Purucker is vooral bekend geworden door vele, nog heden ten dage actuele boeken, zoals Grondslagen der Esoterische Wijsbegeerte, De Mens in de Evolutie, Gulden Regels der Esoterische Wijsbegeerte, H.P. Blavatsky: het Mysterie, De Meesters en het Pad van het Occultisme, Bekleed met de Zon, De dood en daarna, Occult Glossarium en Wind of the Spirit (alle bij Stichting I.S.I.S. verkrijgbaar). G. de Purucker begon in 1924 met onderricht aan leerlingen van de Esoterische Sectie van The Theosophical Society. De eerste verslagen hiervan werden in 1932 gepubliceerd als Fundamentals of the Esoteric Philosophy. In 1982 bracht Stichting I.S.I.S. daarvan een nauwgezette vertaling uit: Grondslagen der Esoterische Wijsbegeerte. Uit hierop aansluitend gegeven onderricht stelde G. de Purucker vervolgens twaalf Esoteric Instructions samen, bedoeld voor intern gebruik in de Esoterische Sectie. De twaalf Esoterische Instructies zijn een vertaling van deze oorspronkelijke, onverminkte editie. Ze zijn tevens een voor de lezer onmisbare tussenstap naar het in 1987 door Stichting I.S.I.S. gepubliceerde Esoterisch Onderricht in de Oosterse School, een vertaling van zijn meest diepgaande, latere leringen.

Het Christendom in het licht van de Theo-sofia
Dick J.P.Kok groeide op in een niet-religieus maar sociaal zeer actief gezin, waar de kopstukken van het beginnend Socialisme in Nederland vergaderden. Geraakt door het oorlogsgeweld in zijn tijd, ging hij als twintiger op zoek naar de diepere zin en samenhang van het leven. Zijn opvoeding bleek een perfecte basis om met een frisse blik, onbevooroordeeld, de Bijbel te gaan lezen. En niet alleen de Bijbel, maar ook de basisboeken van andere religies, zoals het Egyptisch Dodenboek, de Tao Teh King en later de Bhagavad-Gita.
Wie deze boeken leest zonder voor één religie te kiezen, ontdekt de overeenkomsten, de diepere gemeenschappelijke kern in al die religies. Dick J.P. Kok probeerde voortdurend, vanuit zijn sociale achtergrond, deze diepere inzichten die hij vond maatschappelijk toepasbaar te maken.
In 1946 werd hij lid van Het Theosofisch Genootschap, waar de gemeenschappelijke kern van alle religies, de Theo-sofia, intensief wordt bestudeerd. Van 1958 tot 1985 leidde hij dit Genootschap, hield er ontelbare lezingen, ontwikkelde er cursussen die door vele duizenden cursisten zijn gevolgd.
Dit boek De esoterische achtergrond van het Christendom bestaat uit een serie lezingen, meditaties, die hij gaf aan een groep jonge mensen. Zij hadden hem daarom gevraagd omdat hij met hen sprak over ‘jullie Bijbel’, terwijl deze jongeren de Bijbel thuis nooit hadden gelezen.
Stichting I.S.I.S., ooit opgericht door Dick J.P. Kok, wil met dit boek andere, vooral ook jonge mensen de kans geven met eenzelfde frisse blik, even onbevooroordeeld de werkelijk waardevolle Heilige boeken in deze wereld te lezen en in hun esoterische betekenis te begrijpen. Met in het achterhoofd de gedachte dat je iets pas begrijpt als je ernaar leeft.
